A battered and bruised Sam Welsford (Crimson Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) acquired an ideal leadout from his BORA-hansgrohe teammates to take his second win on the 2005 Tour Down Underneath.
Arne Marit (Intermarché-Wanty) took second and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) was third within the quick and hectic finale.
After crashing within the first 5 kilometres, Welsford continued on with ripped shorts as his group managed the early break, and supported him when he was put underneath stress the third time up Menglers Hill when he misplaced contact with the sphere inside 25 kilometres to go. Together with his teammates supporting him, Welsford managed to catch again round 10 kilometres later.
The Australian stayed on his Danny van Poppel’s wheel to return to the entrance for the ultimate dash whereas riders had been preventing for his wheel. Welsford launched his acceleration inside 100 metres to the road whereas behind riders confirmed their discontent with Van Poppel’s traces after he pulled off.
